I have felt connected to The H Foundation since I was in the first grade, when two of my close friends lost their moms to cancer. The H Foundation raises money for basic science cancer research at Northwestern’s Lurie Cancer Center and holds a big event at Navy Pier every year called the Goombay Bash. I don’t even know how many I have attended, but I’ve accumulated many leis so I think it’s a lot. Now that I am old enough, I even volunteer.
Cancer has probably not gotten as much attention lately due to the other health concern that starts with a “C.” COVID also forced the cancellation of the 2020 Goombay Bash, which would have been the 20th anniversary. So when I was assigned a project to help out a charitable organization for my confirmation class, I felt this cause would be the best due to my personal connection and the setbacks that have taken away from The H Foundation’s mission to find a cure for cancer.
As part of my fundraising, I have decided that I will be training for a 5K run over a six-week period of time. I’ll ask everyone to contribute $5--from those I know and those I have yet to meet--to show that even small amounts can add up to make a big difference for an important cause.
I hope you will consider donating and/or sharing my page to help spread the word. Thank you!
